The Silliman University Student Government – Health Committee and the Silliman University Medical Students' Assocation have been at the forefront in promoting health awareness and elevating the overall health of Sillimanians through various activities such as Mass Blood Donation and Blood Typing.
The Philippines is in a health crisis due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The government has enforced safety protocols for the citizens in order to minimize the transmission of the virus. The masses are highly encouraged to routinely clean and disinfect their surroundings, wear face masks when going out, and practice physical distancing. Thus, mass blood donation drives were cancelled. This resulted to the depletion of blood supplies in hospitals and blood banks, endangering patients who are in need of immediate blood transfusion.
For the incoming school year, the SUSG Health Committee and Silliman University Medical Students' Association (SUMSA), would like to address the need for voluntary blood donation in Negros Oriental by creating a long-term program called BLOODLINE HOTLINE which is designed to create a platform for donees who are in need of blood to connect with volunteer donors who wish to be contacted when emergency calls for blood donation arise. Hence the tagline, "Connecting people, saving lives." This program will be led by the Bloodline Hotline team, which consists of members of the SUSG Health Committee.
This program will be done in partnership with the Silliman University Red Cross Youth (SU-RCY), Renaissance Youth Leaders Forum (RYLF) and Ang Sandigan.

SUSG Health Committee's Bloodline Hotline started back in 2017 under the leadership of Mr. Marc Rodney S. Manaban, RMT, together with his vice-chairperson Dr. Abigail F. Teves. The then unnamed activity was one of the two main components; Basic Life Support and Blood Donation, of their overall Save A Life Program. Fueled by their common visions, they planned programs that focused on trainings about Basic Life Support per department and offering free blood typing and blood donation services to Sillimanians.
This initiative was then continued by the SUSG Health Commitee Chairpersons and Vice Chair persons that followed. Under the supervision of Francis Robert U. Estolloso, Meilynne Gem C. Sonjaco and Merl Andrea G. Daarol the blood typing activity and blood donation project was then officially named as the Bloodline Hotline in 2019.
The Bloodline Hotline as since then helped hundreds of lives by providing free bloodtyping to Sillimanians and assisting patients with their call for blood donations. Due to its massive impact and beneficent potential, the SUSG Heath Committee has decided to continue this program. Through the collaborative efforts of Danielle T. Navarro and Kyla V. Sarita, Fabelle T. Tagsip, Shammah Angeli V. Cardino, and Alyana Marianne L. Aviso, the SUSG Health Committee Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons for school year 2020-2021 respectively; the Bloodline Hotline heads, Kersty Elizabeth Alipan and Shaira Shannine V. Miramon; and its partner organizations, the relaunching of a better, wider-scoped, and improved Bloodline Hotline was made possible.
Health is evidently one of the most important aspects in life that people constantly must look out for and so pursuant to the Health Committee's goals, the Bloodline Hotline project was established.
Through the years, there has been an overwhelming number of advances in the vast field of the sciences. Unfortunately, along with these developments are the emerging and reemerging diseases that continuously threaten our homeostatic state and so the need for an improved systematic healthcare is a must. Now, more than ever, projects that illuminate this demand must be perpetually implemented. Projects such as Bloodline Hotline are not only a reflection of another step taken towards the endeavor of healthcare enhancement but as well as an example of humane exposition – both not just temporary luxuries but obvious universal necessities.
Blood is the river of life. By sharing blood, we share life and we make ours more meaningful. The Bloodline Hotline program is a noble activity that is very close to every Medical Student’s heart. It is the very advocacy that promotes selflessness and genuine love to one another.
As the sole organization of Medical Students in Silliman University we strongly support and encourage all students’ participation in this program. Soon, we will become agents of the noble profession of healing and taking part in this activity will already instill in each one of us the great importance of blood in the continuity of life.
A single bag of blood may save a lot of lives as it may be turned into its components. In the same way, a single act of blood donation in response to a call of help from any of our brothers and sisters, can help many lives, can touch many hearts and can give hope to many dreams. SUMSA is all about going beyond. It is time we go and reach out to everyone (especially those who are in need) and bestow them this blessing of life: the heavenly-sent gift of blood. Everyone is involved.

Almost all of the time, a bag of blood is used as a lifeline. But this high demand is never equalled by the supply in our blood banks. Having this project not only aids to that shortage but is also sustainable. These types of solutions may not solve the shortage totally, but it will definitely save lives. This has been the goal of RYLF, to help wherever it is needed. We may not be able to save lives directly, but bridging those in need is better than not doing anything at all to help them.
